Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is frankincense?
- Frankincense is a natural organic resin taken from the Boswellia family of trees. The resin is released when the tree is ‘injured’ and acts as nature’s bandage to help the tree recover and heal. The benefits of frankincense resin range from use as incense, to internal consumption for its perceived medical properties. These uses date back thousands of years and continue today.
Where do you source your frankincense from?
- Our frankincense is entirely sourced from the Sultanate of Oman, specifically from the Dhofar region where frankincense is farmed from the Boswellia Sacra trees in Jabal Samhan. We work with farmers and suppliers in the region to ensure the highest quality organic frankincense delivered through a clean and ethical supply chain.
What are the differences between your grades?
- The frankincense market can be confusing with many different grades and inconsistent naming systems. The reality is there is no standard nomenclature or certification for specific grades. We have tried to simplify this market by offering two main grades: Hojari Frankincense - Incense Grade, our standard grade perfect for burning and our Premium Hojari Frankincense - Therapeutic Grade, which is our higher grade and is suitable for consumption - this is the Dhakar type that has a green tinge and is light in colour.
How do I use frankincense?
- We have two main grades of frankincense currently in our store. Hojari Frankincense - Incense Grade, this grade is perfect for burning indoors to deliver a clean and fragrant scent, and our Hojari Premium grade which is higher quality grade which is suitable for consumption as well as burning as incense.
Instructions for use - Burning Hojari Frankincense as Incense
1. Place a heat-resistant burner on a safe, stable surface.
2. Light a charcoal disc until it glows red and place it in the burner for approx. 5-10 mins.
3. Once the charcoal is hot and turns grey, place small pieces of the frankincense resin on top and let the resin release its fragrant smoke, filling the space with a soothing natural scent.
4. You can also rotate the resin on the coal to avoid over burning, and move the burner around your space.
Alternatively to burning on charcoal a resin burner can be used with a tea light candle placed below it. This will have a similar effect but with a slower burn.
Caution: Never leave burning incense unattended and always ensure there is good ventilation.
Instructions for Internal Consumption (Premium grade only)
1. Take a small piece (pea-sized) of frankincense resin and rinse with clean water. This can be chewed or infused in water.
2. Add the resin to a vessel of water and let it infuse for a minimum of 6 hours (overnight works best), with occasional stirring. The quantity of water is subject to the preferred concentration, but a minimum of 500ml is advisable.
3. Strain the water and drink within 7 days. If residual resin remains, this can be re-infused with additional water and the process repeated (concentration will reduce under each time).
How should I store my frankincense?
-
We recommend storing frankincense out of direct sunlight, in a cool dry place. We suggest to keep your frankincense sealed with the resealable packing to ensure it does not lose its fragrance.
Is there a used by date for frankincense?
- Frankincense resin does not spoil easily and remains aromatic for many years. However, with time it may become more brittle and discolour though still useable for incense. Whilst resins can still be used after years of storage, we advise to buy as you need to not risk any compromise in quality with storage conditions as frankincense effectiveness reduces after 1-2 years. We batch source our frankincense directly from the Dhofar region of Oman to ensure its sourced from recent harvests.
