Frankincense and Air Purification: What the Science Suggests

Interest in air purification has grown as more people pay attention to indoor pollutants, ventilation, and the effect of air quality on comfort and wellbeing. In that conversation, traditional ideas about frankincense purifying the air come up regularly, not only as fragrance but as a substance with possible antimicrobial properties.

It is a fair question, and the honest answer has two halves.

What the research supports

Scientific studies do give some support to the idea [1][2]. Research on Boswellia sacra oils and smoke has reported antimicrobial activity against organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and various airborne bacteria, yeasts and moulds under laboratory or controlled environmental conditions.

One study on Omani frankincense found that some smoke samples showed strong inhibition of the microbes tested. Another reported substantial reductions in airborne microbial counts when frankincense fume was used in a church setting.

The evidence is not one-dimensional, though. Not every study shows equally strong effects, and results vary depending on the type of frankincense, how it is prepared, and which organism is being tested.

The other half of the picture

Burning any incense changes indoor air chemistry [3][4][5]. Reviews and indoor-air studies report that incense smoke can be a significant source of particulate matter, and can raise levels of compounds such as benzene and formaldehyde in enclosed spaces [3][5]. Broader reviews have linked regular, heavy incense exposure with respiratory and other health concerns [4].

This is not a reason to avoid frankincense. It is a reason to burn it the way it has traditionally been burned: occasionally, in small amounts, in a room with air moving through it.

Where that leaves us

The accurate position is a balanced one. Frankincense is a traditional resin with genuinely interesting antimicrobial potential in certain experimental settings. It is not a proven substitute for a dedicated air purification system, and it is not a sanitation product [1][3][5].

Used thoughtfully, it remains what it has always been: valued for its aroma, the atmosphere it creates, and its heritage. Claims about purifying the air have some evidence behind them, but they should be held loosely, and incense should be burned in a well-ventilated space. If smoke is a concern, an electric resin burner warms the resin at a lower temperature and releases the aroma without combustion, which sidesteps most of the particulate issue entirely.

Which resin
